the firefront actually went through their farm, but somehow both the house and the horses that live there have survived.
luckily they don't actually live there, so it wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen if the house DID burn down, but a lot of time and effort went into building it, as well as money.
driving up there was quite terrifying. the surroundings are all normal, and then you turn a corner in the road and all you can see is black. both sides of the road, in the distance, everywhere. we drove for an hour before we saw green again.
you can hear about how big the fires were, you can see aerial shots of them. but seeing them from the ground like that was completely different. you just can't get a picture in your mind until you've seen it for yourself.
anyway, like i said, the farm is okay. but everything except the house, and a few patchs of grass, has been burnt. thought it's gone from black to brown now, which i guess is a good sign.
i did take a lot of photos but da is being gay and not letting me upload them yet, so i'll have to try again later.
